Have you ever thought about starting a blog?

Every blogger has his or her own reasons for blogging but there are some universal truths that most bloggers agree with. I’m going to share 11 reasons why you should start a blog but first a little about why I started blogging.

My Blogging Story

Believe it or not, I had no intentions of becoming a blogger. In fact, I consider myself an accidental blogger.

Four years ago I was running a fledgling Etsy business that wasn’t getting a ton of traction at the time. My husband had a business colleague who suggested that I should start a blog to help draw traffic to my Etsy shop. Personally, I thought the idea was laughable. Me…write a blog…about what? I had all the standard fears. What would I write about? Where will I find the time? I’m not a known expert in my field (do I even have a field?). People will hate my writing style. No one will give a crap about what I blog about.

Fast forward one year later. I decided to quietly take the blogging plunge (I honestly didn’t think anyone would read it). Guess what, it turned out that all of my fears were completely unfounded. The first blog post I ever published has now been pinned over 40,000 times on Pinterest. It didn’t take me long to figure out that blogging was actually pretty amazing. Eventually, it consumed my life and two years after I started blogging, I was generating enough revenue to quit my day job and become a full-time blogger.

I’m not a unicorn. I don’t have any particularly special talents or abilities. I wasn’t top of my class in anything. BUT, I went for it. It turned out that there were people on this planet who were very interested in what I had to share…they just didn’t know how to find me. The very same could be true for you!

11 Reasons Why You Should Start a Blog

1. It’s a Great Confidence Booster

Once I had a handful of blog posts under my belt, I realized that my confidence was growing. Blogging may sound challenging and it can be at first, but as you get more proficient you’ll overcome those challenges and start celebrating your small victories. Just wait until you have a blog post go viral. O-M-G there’s no other feeling like it!

Your readers are also great for boosting your confidence. People are incredibly grateful for anything you can share with them to help them or make their lives easier in any capacity. As long as you’re producing useful content, your audience will start leaving kind and thankful comments and boy does that feel good. You may be improving or benefiting their lives and ways you never even dreamed of (I’ve experienced this many times over and I’m always astounded).

2. It’s Gives You a Creative Outlet

This is pretty much my favorite reason for blogging. See, I suffer from musttryeverycraftanddiy-itis’ – just ask my husband. Seriously though, I have a minor crafting/making addiction. People sometimes have trouble finding things to blog about. Not me. I have pages of things I want to try and blog about but it’s simply a matter of finding the time. My blog has become the ultimate creative outlet where I have a valid excuse to spend hours drawing, crocheting, making natural beauty products, creating recipes and generally making messes all over my house.

Blogging gives you a little piece of online real estate that’s 100% yours. You have complete freedom to engage with your creativity however you see fit. Pretty powerful!

3. You Can Help and Inspire Others

Originally I started my blog for reasons that would ultimately benefit me. What I didn’t understand at the time is how I was inspiring others. People are constantly leaving comments about how I helped them do something they had always wanted to try or how they I inspired a child to learn a new skill. Now my reasons for blogging have evolved to inspire others to follow their passions and live them out in a creative, unique way that makes them feel alive.

4. To Become a Better Writer

Truth be told, this is the number one reason it took me a year to decide to start a blog. Writing has never been my strength but eventually I had to just say what the hell and go for it. While I know I will always struggle with this part of blogging, I am confident that I get better with every piece I write. I no longer let my lack of self-confidence hold me back from following my dreams. I’m proud to say that I recently even wrote my first eBook (part of the new course for bloggers coming this Spring). If you would have told me I’d be writing an eBook about blogging four years ago I would have full-on laughed in your face. As with everything in life, practice makes progress.

5. No Experience Needed

Let’s be honest, anyone can start a blog. You literally need no experience to get going and the setup is relatively easy and inexpensive. Most other businesses can seem overwhelming with business plans, inventory procurement, and extensive start-up costs. With minimal barriers to entering the world of blogging you have an amazing chance to succeed. All you really need is your imagination and a willingness to put the time and energy into it.

6. To Become an Expert

If you can blog about your passion you can position yourself as an expert in your field. Your blog is you own personal classroom for you to share and teach your expertise. The more you consistently write about your particular topic, the wider you audience will grow. Believe it or not, I am now considered somewhat of an expert in the crochet world – seriously! Guess what though, I only started crocheting three years ago. BUT, I blog about crocheting often and I create free patterns for my readers. My audience now perceives me as an expert simply because I’m putting it out to the world on a regular basis.

7. To Learn and Challenge Yourself

It’s a well-known fact that when people learn they activate their brains, grow, and feel fulfilled. It’s so easy to become comfortable and complacent with jobs and what we do on a daily basis. Blogging challenges you to learn new things like how to write convincing titles, how to take great photos, how to maximize search engine optimization, how to promote yourself with social media and the list goes on. I’m so proud of everything I’ve learned during my time blogging and now I’m at the stage where I can teach others to blog – oh, the circle of life.

8. A Blog Can Help Your Business

Blogging is an amazing way to passively (or actively) promote your business. When you blog about your business or expertise you start sharing your ideas, feelings, opinions and personality with your readers. Your audience gets to know you and they start connecting with you. Eventually this connection helps establish trust with them which in turn opens up interesting business and professional possibilities.

By the way, I’d be remiss if I didn’t help mention how blogs rock the socks off search engine optimization (SEO). Every amazing blog post you write gives search engines another opportunity to find you and bring more traffic to your business.

9. To Connect and Build Community

Blogs are such a great way to connect with people. Blogging about your passion opens opportunities for you to develop relationships with people who have similar interests. Not only will you find your tribe within your audience, over time, you’ll likely start connecting with other bloggers and influencers in your niche. Blogging allows you the opportunity to meet people from all walks of life from all over the world. It’s a chance to connect with people you’d have no other way to connect with.

10. You Can Generate Revenue From Blogging

Maybe this is obvious but blogging is a great way to make money. There are many options for generating revenue by blogging including advertising, working with affiliates, sponsored posts, working with brands, selling your services, digital or physical products. You can make hundreds, even thousands of dollars per month blogging if you’re willing to put in the time and effort. Originally, I didn’t blog to make money but rather using my blog as a vehicle to direct traffic to my Etsy shop. Eventually, I decided to work with advertisers and within a few months, I was making more money from my blog than I was with my Etsy business.

11. It Can Offer You Personal Freedom

This is another one of the main reasons I blog. Not only has blogging given me the freedom to share my passion and creativity with the world, it has afforded me certain freedoms important to my lifestyle. Since I’ve become a full-time blogger, I don’t have official office hours which means I’m available to my family whenever they need me (although I maintain strong boundaries around my work time). I can pick up my daughter from school every day at 2:40 pm without checking with my boss. I can take time off when my daughter has a special school activity or professional development day. This year, with some careful planning, I was even able to take most of the summer off to spend with my family and friends at the lake.

I hope you’ve found this list of 11 Reasons Why You Should Start a Blog valuable. If you’ve ever thought about trying your hand at blogging, I encourage you to give it a try.
